At HY-C, we get this question all the time: Why are so many of your roof products painted black?

The black paint we use has a textured, semi-gloss finish, which differentiates our products from those with a standard flat or matte finish. We also manufacture products in a variety of other colors — but yes, most of our roof products are black.

And there’s a good reason for that. Our black finishes deliver practical, hard-to-beat advantages for both homeowners and the technicians who install them.

Black looks nice

Black looks great on virtually every home.

The color adds modern sophistication, enhances architectural details through contrast, and creates a clean, intentional look that works for both traditional and contemporary styles.

It also pairs well with natural materials like wood, stone, and brick, and provides a crisp backdrop for landscaping or other exterior accents.

It's not super complicated, it just works

Black hides

Have you heard of “universal shadows”?

Whether it’s on a roof, chimney,  gable vent, or mechanical space, black visually disappears because these areas are naturally shadowed. That means the hardware blends in instead of drawing attention.

Homeowners and installers appreciate that.

Black is also a practical color in the metal-fabrication world because it hides surface variation. In other words, materials exposed to cutting, bending, or welding often show tiny marks, and our black simply makes those marks less noticeable.

That’s why it’s the standard finish for exterior hardware across the industry; black keeps everything looking clean and uniform in the field.

Black doesn’t attract

Our aim is that, once the installation is complete, it should look as though nothing was ever added.

Why?

Because when a guard doesn’t stand out visually, it removes some of the obvious cues pests use to identify potential openings.

Black isn’t a bright or reflective color, especially not the black we use. It doesn’t sparkle, shine, or catch a critter’s eye, which is a huge advantage for pest and wildlife professionals.

If it’s inconspicuous to a raccoon searching for an opening, it’s good enough for us (and likely for you, too).

An example: Pest Armor®

A ridge vent runs along the peak of many roofs.

Beneath it, roofers leave a gap so hot attic air can escape. Cool air enters through the soffits, moves through the attic, and vents out the ridge.

But that opening can’t be left exposed, as rain, birds, squirrels, and other critters would make their way in. So, roofers install a flexible plastic ridge vent material over the gap and cover it with ridge cap shingles.

From the ground, it usually looks like a dark shadow line.

The problem? That plastic flexes and lifts over time, especially in areas with big temperature swings. When it lifts, animals can chew through it or slip underneath and get inside the attic.

That’s the weakness of standard ridge vents, and that’s where our HY-GUARD EXCLUSION® Pest Armor® Profiles step in.

We have two profiles of Pest Armor designed for ridge vent applications: High Profile Z-Mesh™ and Low Profile Z-Mesh™. These black, galvannealed steel meshes take advantage of those universal shadows to blend seamlessly into the roofline. It looks refined, stays discreet, and doesn’t attract animals (or nosy neighbors).

Fact is, Pest Armor does its job — and does it well — with help from our durable black powder-coat finish.

So… black?

Yes, black. A textured, semi-gloss black, specifically.

As mentioned, most of our roof products follow this standard. However, some lines also come in tan, brown, or white — we generally try to stick with neutral, unobtrusive palettes.

That said, if you or a client needs a color we don’t offer, our powder-coated surfaces take paint very well. We’ve seen many wildlife operators pick custom shades from Sherwin-Williams, spray them on our products, and continue on with their work.

In short, customization is easy, and you’re never limited to what’s on the shelf

Whether you repaint our products or leave them as-is, we still encourage you to give the black finish a try.

It’s a choice that blends in, stands out, and always performs.
