There are several different ways to determine if a fireplace is drafty. Placing and observing a lit candle in front of the fireplace is a tried and true draft test. If the flame of the candle dances or moves, there's a draft!
The US Department of Energy has determined that homeowners lose between 15-30% of their heat through unused fireplaces.
The Hearth Stopper® is designed to fully cover the opening of a masonry fireplace or a wood burning fireplace insert. As long as the Hearth Stopper® size is larger than the fireplace opening, and there are no obstructions, there should not be an issue with the fit.
The Hearth Stopper® has 0.75 inch long felt weather stripping which fills the mortar joints, keeping families comfortable.
Glass fireplace doors do not prevent drafts, nor do they insulate. Glass fireplace doors are designed to keep sparks and ash contained within a fireplace without obstructing the view when a fire is lit.
The Hearth Stopper® cannot be installed over fireplace doors. They must be removed in order for the Hearth Stopper® installation bracket to be properly installed. Most fireplace doors are easily removed by loosening the knobs on interior of the fireplace opening.
Most fireplace dampers warp, rust and become damaged over time as they endure extreme temperature and often wet weather related conditions. While fireplace dampers do help reduce drafts, they often do not create a full seal to eliminate drafting.
Yes! The Hearth Stopper® is easily removed in less than 10 seconds.
The Hearth Stopper® is designed to be used on a cold fireplace. After having a fire in the fireplace, ensure the fire is completely out and the fireplace temperature is under 100° before using the Hearth Stopper®.
Yes! To use the Hearth Stopper® on a wood burning fireplace insert, the doors will need to be removed. Homeowner's will want to refer to their wood burning fireplace insert Owner's Manual to understand how to remove and reinstall the doors.
Yes! To use the Hearth Stopper® on a zero clearance fireplace, the doors will need to be removed. Homeowner's will want to refer to their zero-clearance insert Owner's Manual to understand how to remove and reinstall the doors.
Great question! In short, the answer is no, the Hearth Stopper® will not work on every fireplace style. Linear fireplaces, or contemporary floating fireplaces which are typically installed without a hearth, are not a fit for the Hearth Stopper®. The Hearth Stopper® is designed to be installed on a fireplace with a hearth no narrower than 6".
