TL;DR: Choosing the right Shelter® log rack comes down to three things: Capacity (how much wood you burn), cost (how much durability you want to pay for), and convenience (where it needs to fit). This guide walks through the lineup against those three C's, compares models side by side, and answers the sizing and material questions we hear most.

At HY-C, we get a lot of questions about log racks. In a previous article, we explained why a log rack beats a loose woodpile or a DIY stack every time. If you haven't read that one yet, it's worth a look before you buy.

Once you're sold on getting a rack, the next question is which one. Our Shelter® lineup includes several styles, and the right pick comes down to three factors we call the three C's:

  • Capacity: How much wood you burn each season
  • Cost: How much you want to spend, and how durable you need it to be
  • Convenience: Where the rack needs to fit and how it needs to work for you

Here's how to weigh those three factors against the actual lineup.

The Shelter Log Rack Lineup

Shelter Log Racks (Fixed Sizes)

If you already have a rough idea of how much wood you'll burn in a season, the fixed-size Shelter Log Rack line is the simplest starting point. These come in five stock sizes, from a compact 28" model up to a 96" extra-large-tall version:

Model

Dimensions

Capacity

Max Weight

SLRS

28" x 12" x 33"

1,000 lbs

SLRP

45" x 13" x 33"

2,000 lbs

SLRM

45" x 13" x 45"

½ face cord

3,000 lbs

SLRXL

96" x 13" x 45"

1 face cord

4,000 lbs

SLRXLT

96" x 13" x 60"

1¼ face cords

4,000 lbs

These are best if you already know your seasonal wood needs and want a straightforward, no-assembly-required option that matches a specific size and budget.

Shelter Adjustable Log Rack

The Adjustable Log Rack takes a different approach: You supply two pressure-treated 2x4s (any length you want, up to a practical 16'), and the steel end frames do the rest.

It's built from 1¼" tubular steel with a black powder coat finish, and its 13" width and 48" fixed height make it a flexible option for anyone who wants to dial in an exact length without committing to a stock size.

Shelter Adjustable Arc Log Rack

Our newest addition to the lineup, the Adjustable Arc Log Rack, takes the same build-your-own-length approach but upgrades the look and the build.

It uses powder-coated galvannealed steel end frames with a rounded, "Urban Rustic" profile designed to look as good on a patio as it does next to a woodshed. Like the standard Adjustable rack, you provide the 2x4s; the arc ends handle length, capacity, and structure.

This is the model we'd point to for the convenience and customization pick in the lineup. If you want a rack that adapts to an odd-shaped side yard or a narrow patio without sacrificing style, this is it.

If capacity is your top priority and you burn through a predictable amount of wood each season, start with the fixed sizing chart above. If your space is oddly shaped, or you simply want more control over exactly how long your rack is, the Adjustable or Adjustable Arc models solve that problem, with the Arc adding a more refined look for visible outdoor spaces.

Assembly and Placement Tips

Regardless of which model you choose, a few setup basics apply across the board:

  • Assembly is fast and easy: The fixed-size racks arrive ready to load. The Adjustable and Adjustable Arc models require you to add your own 2x4s, but both are designed to assemble in minutes with basic tools
  • Placement matters as much as the rack itself: Keep your rack elevated and open on the sides for airflow, and avoid pushing it flush against your house, both to protect your siding from pests and to let wood season properly
  • Leave the top open unless a storm is coming: Using a quality log rack cover lets moisture escape while still keeping rain and snow off your stack
  • Measure your space before you buy: For fixed sizes, confirm the footprint fits where you plan to place it. For adjustable models, measure the exact run of space you have so you can cut your 2x4s to the right length the first time

Log Rack Buyer FAQs

people-thinking

How much firewood does a face cord vs. a full cord take up?

A full cord is a stack measuring 4' x 4' x 8', while a face cord is typically one-third of that, since it's just one row of logs the length of your firewood (usually 16" to 18") stacked 4' high and 8' long. Our fixed-size racks are labeled by how much of a face cord (or full cord) they hold, which makes comparing capacity straightforward.

What size log rack do I need for my household?

It depends on how often you burn and what you burn in. A once-in-a-while fireplace user can usually get by with a small or patio-size rack, while a wood stove or furnace user burning through a cord or more each winter should look at the XL or XLT sizes, or an adjustable model built to a longer run.

Can I build a custom-length log rack myself?

Yes. Both the Adjustable Log Rack and the Adjustable Arc Log Rack are designed for exactly this. You supply the 2x4s (pressure-treated lumber is recommended), and the steel end frames provide the structure, allowing you to build a rack to the exact length your space requires.

How do adjustable log racks compare to fixed-size racks?

Fixed racks are simpler and require zero measuring or lumber, while adjustable racks trade a small amount of setup effort for the ability to match your exact space instead of picking the closest stock size.

Can a log rack fit a small patio or narrow side yard?

Yes. The Adjustable and Adjustable Arc models are the better fit here since you control the exact length, and the Arc's more compact, styled end frames are built with visible outdoor spaces like patios in mind.
